The Book Thief…

At Christmas, if I don’t get a book I get twitchy.

Sometimes even angry.

This rarely happens now that my Mother in law has me figured out. Before Christmas she asks me what books I want-  this year I emailed her back with “We Are Water”, which I am currently reading and love, its also by my most favourite author on the planet, Wally Lamb (I am sure I am Dolores from She’s Come Undone”, “The Fault in Our Stars”, by John Green (It was okay, I am stoked for the movie) and “The Book Thief” by Markas Zusak.  And as usual, the best Mother in Law on the planet delivered with all three.

After I was finished kissing my Christmas books, I started to read “The Book Thief” because I knew the movie was coming out very soon.  It is the best book. The best. The best. The best. The best. I finished it in 3 days. But, I did get the flu and had nothing to do for 2 days but read, sleep and yak.

The movie, which was released a couple of days ago, is wonderful.  Is it as good as the book? Well, I rarely feel that way about adaptations, except for “Of Mice and Men”, I liked the book but adored the movie.

This is what 20th Century Fox has to say about the movie, and I will let them do it because I don’t want to give too much away!

THE BOOK THIEF

Based on the beloved best-selling book comes an “extremely moving” (Leonard Maltin, Indiewire) story of a girl who transforms the lives of those around her during World War II, Germany. When her mother can no longer care for her, Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) is adopted by a German couple (OSCAR® Winner Geoffrey Rush* and OSCAR® Nominee Emily Watson**). Although she arrives illiterate, Liesel is encouraged to learn to read by her adoptive father. When the couple then takes in Max (Ben Schnetzer), a Jew hiding from Hitler’s army, Liesel befriends him. Ultimately, words and imagination provide the friends with an escape from the events unfolding around them in this extraordinary, acclaimed film directed by Brian Percival (Downton Abbey).
